In the north of Oman, September is still extremely hot.

Haverst season for the dates is going on.

High in the mountain, people harvest walnuts, pomogranadtes and ’bout’ (a very tasteful wild bay).

In the south, “Khareef” (monsoon) season, ends in the very beginning of September : clouds disapear, sun comes back, temperatures rise suddenly. Evaporation from water logged soil and plants produces a very high humidity rate which is difficult to bare : everything is green (pastures and forests), landscapes are superb, but weather is bad.

Bad weather in Northern Oman bring sudden drop in temperatures inland.

** in the montains, above all in winter (when the sun is lower), there can be big difference between northern slopes, which see less sun, and southern slopes which are continuously exposed. The same apply to steep-sided places.

Most suitable outdoor-activities in September in Oman

The best outdoor activity in september is aquatic hiking and canyoning (which we do in short and t-shirt, without wetsuits) : we spend the whole day in the water when it’s more than 40°C outside!

In this season, however, you have to be careful in case of sudden strom which can produce falsh-floods.

It’s still the high season for green turtles to lay eggs, which you can watch in the marine reserve of Ras Al Jinz. In summer, up to 200 turtles can come in a single night on a single beach!

Camping high in the mountain starts to be possible again.

Finaly, “Khareef” (monsoon) season ends in Dhofar : sun comes back and the regiion offers a beautiful green scenery (pastures and forests) which we do not expect in Arabia. Unfortunately, the weather is partiicularly tough at that time : strong sun, high temperatures, and extreme humidity…. So, if you are ready to bare harsh conditions to discover the green Dhofar, its endemic flora and fauna, and to see camels and cows sharing the same green grazing land, it’s a good time for a discovery trip (short walks rather than hikes) of Dhofar’s mountains and coastline.

Outdoor-activities to avoid in September in Oman

In the north, it’s too hot for mountain hiking, camping in the lowlands (even in higher heights, we can’t say it’s fresh…), spend a full day at the beach, and of course to stay and hike in the desert

In the south (Dhofar), it’s too hot and humid for hiking

You would like to travel to Oman in September?

We do not have scheduled trips which you can join at this times of the year.

However, we can organize, on-demand, a tailor-made tour in the North with canyoning and aquatic hiking, maybe include turtle watching, half-day snorkeling, and a few short walks and camping ovenights in the heights of Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar.

As well, if you would like to visit the green Dhofar under the sun, we can organize a discovery trip in this region.
